For the past few years, some members of Caldicot Male Voice Choir have performed a pantomime as a contribution to the Annual Christmas party. This year on Friday 6th December, nine members of the ‘Choir Ensemble’ provided an evening of wonderful entertainment opening with a round of audience participation of Christmas Carols accompanied by Shirley Anne James.
The ‘Choir Ensemble’, accompanied by Shirley Anne James and hosted by chorister Grahame Morton continued the party with songs from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical ‘South Pacific’ including ‘Nothin’ Like a Dame’ and a hilarious rendition of ‘I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta my Hair’ and a magnificent solo of ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ by bass chorister Stuart Parry.
The evening was supported by the U3A Ukulele band with items including ‘Sloop John B’, ‘Jambalaya’ which featured chorister Nigel Keene on flute, ‘New York Girls (can’t you dance the polka)’ ‘Home, Home on the Range’ and Bob Dylan’s ‘Rock Me Mama’ to which the audience enthusiastically joined in.
The evening also included guest ladies choir Serenata accompanied by Olivia Dance who delighted the audience with ‘We are Lights’, ‘Dream a Little Dream’, ‘A La Nanita’, ‘Winter Wonderland’ and acapella ‘Calon Lan’.
The ‘Choir Ensemble’ then finalised with songs from the musical ‘Oklahoma’ including not only the title song but a solo performance by bass chorister Ron Powell of ‘Oh What a Beautiful Morning’ which arguably matched Howard Keel’s version. Stuart Parry also joined in with a solo of Glen Cambell’s ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’. the whole ensemble sang the Paint Your Wagon song ‘I was Born Under a Wandrin’ Star’ and the item finished with a whip crackin’ rendition of ‘Rawhide’ by chorister Andy Friedman originally sung by Frankie Laine in the TV series.
Other choristers taking part were Roger Matthews, Paul Thomas, Tony Griffiths, Karl Gregory and Nick Dance, projectionist.
The party also included games of Bingo, Heads and Tails, rounds of The Twelve Days of Christmas and a raffle all of which raised about £130 for the St David’s Hospice charity, contributing to nearly £2,000 raised in total for the charity this year.
