Choir Sings at the Yemeni Wales Festival again

The Choir and many of the supporters of the Yemeni Wales Festival.

Caldicot Male Voice Choir was thrilled to be invited once again to take part in the Yemeni Wales Festival at Pill Harriers Athletic Ground in Newport on Sunday 13th August.

The rain kept off for the afternoon while the choir of about forty choristers entertained the crowds in two parts. Conducted by Shirley Anne James and accompanied by Musical Director Sian Hatton the choir sang a mix of songs including Cwm Rhondda, 76 Trombones, 16 Tons, You’ll Never Walk Alone, This is the Moment and Welsh favourites Rachie, Anfonaf Angel, Yma o Hyd and Y Darlun. Many had never heard a Welsh Male Voice Choir before and were surprised and delighted by the performances judging by the number of videos and photos taken by onlookers.

Burgers and cold drinks were generously provided by the organisers for all the choristers and music team.

The festival, organised by Reggie Al-Haddi and Pillgwenlly councillor Debbie Jenkins is held annually and included this year demonstrations from Gwent Police, St John’s Ambulance and many activities for the children (and some adults) including archery, face painting and plate spinning. Other activities included bouncy castles, slides and Zorbs, thoroughly enjoyed by all the children.

Throughout the afternoon the crowds were also entertained with live Yemeni Music, parades and dancing with many dressed in the national costumes of the Yemen. Also included were wandering minions, Paw Patrol and other cartoon characters.

Attended and appreciated by Newport East MP Jessica Morden and several City of Newport councillors, this was a wonderfully successful event designed to bring communities in Newport together and experience each other’s cultures.

Following the performance the choir retired to the Pill Harriers Rugby Club for refreshment where Chairman Graham Hughes was delighted to be presented with a glass engraved plaque by Debbie Jenkins in appreciation of the support the choir had given to the festival.
