On Sunday 11th June the choir was thrilled to welcome Minehead Male Voice Choir to the hall. Minehead has just performed in St Illtud’s Church, Llantwit Fardre, Pontypridd the day before and on returning home asked if it could call in to the hall for a joint concert. We were of course, delighted to accept the request.
On a glorious, hot day Caldicot Male Voice Choir conducted by Shirley Anne James and accompanied by Guest accompanist Gwyn Morgans opened with the well known hymn Rachie followed by the spiritual Rock a my soul followed by16 Tons, You’ll Never Walk Alone and Anfonaf Angel.
Conducted by Jacqueline Butterworth and accompanied by Alan Hemsley, Minehead MVC opened their varied and extensive programme with the theme from the Titanic and included in their two part performance; Where would I be without my music? American Trilogy, Softly as I Leave You, It’s now or never, Lily of the Valley, an Italian trilogy including O Sole Mio, Kwm Ba Ya, Speed Your Journey and two locally written pieces Cross the Harbour and Shining.
Caldicot finalised the intensive programme with Gwahoddiad, A Miner’s Song, This is the Moment, Yma o Hyd and of course Mae hen Wlad fy Nhadau, the Welsh National Anthem.
This was a wonderful afternoon, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone which also included the presentation of a slate plaque to Minehead chairman Sid Gibson by Caldicot’s chairman Graham Hughes.
Many thanks to the choir supporters who provided the copious refreshments for both choirs and to all who made this wonderful afternoon possible, not least the bar staff and those who set out the hall and cleared up afterwards. Also thanks to Colleen for taking the photos.
The choir is looking forward to welcoming Dursley Male Voice Choir to the hall on Friday 23rd June.
