Leaving the wettest June on record for a reasonably sunny July day and surrounded by civic dignitaries with enough gold chain to put Tutankhamun to shame,  Jeff Williams and Lyn Gauntlett were pleased to represent the choir at the Civic Service on the occasion of the offiicial attendance of the Mayor of Caldicot, Councillor Jim Higginson. The service on 1st July at St Mary the Virgin in Caldicot was conducted by Rev. Den Richards, vicar of Portkewett who replaced Lyndon Harrison due to illness.  The service was jointly conducted by Caldicot Methodist Minister Rev. Preben Anderson and lessons were read by Rev. Annie Church and Rev. Alison Littler, who was only ordained yesterday. Hymns included Love Divine, Guide me, O thou Great Redeemer and Praise my Soul, the King of Heaven during which a collection was made on behalf of the Mayor’s Charity, Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice and St. Mary the Virgin Parish Church.

Jim moved to Caldicot from Ebbw Vale to work at Llanwern and has been a councillor since 1983 and this is his third term of office as Mayor.  He has also been a loyal supporter of the choir having been a Vice President since 1988.

Jeff and Lyn were also delighted to meet up again with long standing supporter of the choir, Jessica Morden, Member of Parliament for Newport East since 2005 at the Mayor’s reception at the Severn View Club. Jessica hopes to be available for our Gala concert in September.
