Following on from its Christmas events at St Pierre Golf Club and resort and at Underwood village centre the week end before, Caldicot Male Voice Choir continued its Christmas celebrations by entertaining the travellers stopping off for refreshments and relief from the pouring rain at the M4 Magor Services on the afternoon of 7th December.
Conducted by Sian Hatton and accompanied by Olivia Dance and John Nicholson, the choir opened with ‘Joy to the World’ and continued its varied programme of carols and Christmas songs including ‘God Rest You Merry Gentlemen’, the Russian drinking song ‘Casatschok’, ‘Silver Bells’, the amusing parody of ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ in which not least the pear tree was chopped down and the three French hens turned into chicken soup, ‘Mary’s Boy Child’ made famous by Harry Belafonte and covered by Boney M, the Johnny Mathis hit ‘When a Child is Born’, ‘Little Drummer Boy’ famous in a duet by Bing Crosby and David Bowie, a rousing ‘Christmas Medley’ and included a Welsh song, Safwrn yn y Bwlch and the famous Welsh Hymn, Rachie before finalising with ‘A White Christmas.
Many of the travellers remarked on how good the sound was and how the cheerful singing made their a journey so much less arduous in terrible driving conditions. The choir was also pleased that so many young children enjoyed the singing as well.
