CHOIR CELEBRATES 50th ANNIVERSARY OF DURAND SCHOOL

On Friday the 30th June, Caldicot Male Voice Choir was pleased to be invited to take part in the Durand Primary School music festival in Caldicot held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school. No doubt In that time several of the choristers had attended the school and maybe many of the children present will join the choir in 15 or so years.

While the rain held off and introduced by Master of Ceremonies Jason Robinson, the choir stepped onto the stage to a children’s fanfare of drums. Musical Director Sian Hatton explained to the children about how Welsh male choirs began and how to sing in them. Accompanied by John Nicholson, the Choir began by singing the rousing Welsh hymn, ‘Rachie’ followed by ‘Y Darlun’. The children really enjoyed singing ‘Yma o Hyd’ as well as ‘Twinkle, twinkle little star’ in Sol fa notes with the signs demonstrated by Sian. The Choir completed it performance with Mae Hen Wlad fy Nhadau joined in by the children and audience.

The wonderful afternoon enjoyed by a full house of parents and supporters of the school included African and Talko drumming with glockenspiel displays, dancing and singing to popular songs from the decades of the school’s history and finalized enthusiastically with none other than YMCA.
