On October 6th the Choir will be visited by prize winning soprano Ffion Edwards who will be presented with a £1000 award as winner of the Geraint Morris Memorial Award by the chairman of the Welsh Association of Male Choirs, Ellis Davies. Hopefully, health permitting, WAMC secretary Layton Watkins will also be there.
The Geraint Morris Memorial Award is a competition organised by the Welsh Association of Male Choirs for young soloists, accompanists and conductors. It has been in existence since 2006. The Competition was named in memory of Geraint Morris, a long standing member of the Executive Committee and a past Chairman. Geraint was one of the members who was involved in the setting up of the competition. Since 2015 it has been the policy of the Association that the winners of this competition will take part in the next Festival of Massed Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Ffion is a 20 year old from Magor who attended the Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw in Pontypool, is now living in Cardiff and is studying for a B. Mus. honours degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She won the recently held competition on September 3rd at Neath to follow her second place at the National Eisteddfod in the Lieder solo 19 to 25 year old category in August.
We are all looking forward to the evening and hopefully Ffion will sing for us and will enjoy listening to us as well, as we hope Ellis and Layton will too.
