Seren Olivia Witcombe was born 3 months prematurely in Southampton on 27th December 2011, weighing only 500g, which is about the same as half a bag of sugar. Transferred to the Royal Gwent Hospital when considered strong enough she tragically, despite the hopes of her family, parents Sian and Daley and the devoted care of the Royal Gwent Hospital neonatal unit, gave up her brave fight for life, aged just seven months and weighing just 10 pounds on July 29th. She never saw her home in Graigview Terrace, Talywain.
The choir was so moved by this tragic story, relayed by fellow chorister Dave Kirton, that when they found out that a friend, Joanne Powell of Seren’s mother, Sian had formed an appeal in memory of Seren, to help raise funds to support the neo-natal unit at the Royal Gwent in its essential work, choristers were determined to help out. To this end the choir will be holding an open practice night at the Choir Hall, Mill Lane, Caldicot on October 11th at 7pm. There is no charge for entry but donations will gratefully be accepted on behalf of the charity. Refreshments at a small charge in aid of the charity and a bar will be available. Please come along and give this very worthwhile cause your full support. You will also enjoy the fabulous sound of Caldicot Male Voice Choir being put through its practice paces by our musical team, led by Siân Hatton. Sian and her friends visited the choir last night, Thursday 27th September to hear the choir run through its programme in preparation for its concert at Bingham Hall, Cirencester on Saturday 29th September. Left to right at the forefront of the photos are Jenna Powell, Sian Evans (Seren’s mother), Joanne Powell (Seren Appeal organiser) and Siân Hatton (Musical Director).
Put an entry in your diaries now (October 11th 7pm) and please come along to support the Choir, Seren’s family and her friends to aid the vital work of the Royal Gwent Hospital neonatal unit in their struggle to give premature babies a fighting chance.
