Members of Caldicot Male Voice Choir were pleased and proud to assist a Charity Valentine’s Evening to support the Victims of Chernobyl Childrens’ Trust at the Choir Hall, Caldicot on Friday 10th February. This is a worthy, local charity which for the past 24 years has been raising money to provide a month’s recuperative rest and holiday to children of Belarus affected by the Chernobyl Nuclear disaster. For 23 years the Trust, coordinated by Mrs Marcia Doyle and helped by the generosity of people from all over South East Wales, has also been funding convoys of humanitarian aid to provide much needed support to hospitals and orphanges in the area.
An audience of over 130 braved the cold, wet weather to listen and dance to a great evening of music provided by the JJR Trio, a band made up of three members of the choir, (John, Jason and Roly) who played a mixture of pop, rock and romance for over three hours. Unfortunately, supporting singer Ellen James was unable to come due to illness, but JJR , exhausted at the end of the night, stoically filled in the gap. A raffle was organised by local ladies, with a copious, wonderful supply of valuable prizes generously donated by nearby businesses and individuals. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all in the romantic, candle-lit, roses and heart decorated atmosphere of the Choir Hall.
The evening raised a magnicent, last count estimate of £1300 for the charity and many thanks must go not only to the entertainment and raffle sponsors but also to Vanessa Nicholson and her team of ladies for organising the event, Colleen Gauntlett for all the hall and table decorations, the volunteer bar staff of Dave Kirton, Spike Hughes, Roger Francis and not forgetting all the boys who set up and cleaned the hall afterwards.
Sincere thanks were expressed by Marcia to the Choir for all its help in supporting this event.
