Christmas Cake for Carolling Choristers

Christmas celebrations started a little early for the Choir when Colleen Gauntlett, wife of our PRO, Lyn came to the choir hall and resumed a tradition she started a few years ago.   Colleen presented a self baked Christmas cake for consumption by the choristers at half time at practice on Monday 21st November.  Many of you will remember the cakes she made for the 50th Anniversary celebrations.

The early presentation was because both are away on holiday during December.  Layers of chocolate sponge filled with butter cream and coated with icing and decorated in a Christmas wintry theme, the cake was consumed within minutes by the appreciative choir who all expressed their appreciation, many lining up for seconds.  We’re all looking forward to your next cake, Colleen.  The photographs show Colleen cutting the cake while baritones Tommy Hole, Leon Jones and Tony Griffiths look on in anticipation.

New Year Celebrations

On a filthy, wet, December Saturday night, over a hundred choristers, wives, partners and choir supporters made their way to the Choir Hall, dressed in their finery, in eager anticipation of seeing in the New Year 2012.

While munching away on traditional crisps, dips, sausage rolls and other savouries, the evening began with easy listening entertainment by Bristolian father and daughter duet, Musicians in Black (they’ve previously appeared at the hall as Memory Lane) who presented a popular and wide ranging mixture of genres from popular, country and western including Shania Twain’s ‘It Don’t Impress Me Much’  through to Abba, Tom Jones, Cerys Matthews, rock n’ roll, jive, The Beatles and more.  When they played a selection of 60’s and 70’s music it was enough to get the ladies out of their chairs, leave their white wines behind and cavort around imaginary handbangs, just as they did when they were teenagers (well almost).  They were joined by the men as soon as they had downed their pints and ordered replacements.  No change there then!

At the interval, the Raffle was conducted by Leon and photos of some delighted winners are shown in the photo gallery.  Many thanks to those who donated prizes to raise funds to support the choir’s activities.

The celebrating crowds included a baby boy born on Christmas Eve to Nina and Robert, so let’s hope the experience doesn’t stay with him for a lifetime – he hasn’t even been named yet, but I gather he’s Ron Powell’s grandson.  Maybe he’ll join the choir in 18 years time?  There were lots of broody hens clucking around on the night, so maybe a local baby boom in August/September???

BREAKING NEWS 12th January 2012 – I’ve just learned, to his grandad Ron’s delight that he has been named Rhys Thomas!

Our thanks go to those who set up and cleared the hall afterwards, to Siân Hatton, Dave Gould and Wyn Goodwin for volunteering their superb, friendly service in keeping us all well lubricated from behind the bar; to Ann and Margaret for organising and selling raffle tickets on the night; to Musicians in Black for their lively dance entertainment and most of all to Bob Doggett for organising the evening and selling tickets.

The last Year was left behind and the New Year suitably brought in by singing the traditional Auld Lang Syne, wearing our multiple funny hats and trying to bump into each other across the dance floor.  Why do we do it?   Followed by lots of hand-shakes, hugs and kisses, some from people we didn’t even know, everyone finally left the hall at about 1-00 am, in a happier mood to find it had stopped raining!  Welcome in 2012!

Ding Dong Merrily on High from The Web-site team

We three good-looking, wise men of the web-site administration team ( Tony, Graham (Spike) and Lyn) would like to close off the year by

 Wishing all our visitors

A Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda.

The new website was started only last April with simple beginnings and since then we have worked hard to give the choir a regularly updated medium that is not only informative and easy to navigate but is fun and interesting to visit.  We have tried hard to keep up to date with choir activities and events on our NEWS page and endeavoured to give an insight into not only the choir’s illustrious history but give a view of the lighter side of life as a chorister with ad-hoc photographs and descriptive write ups. From comments received, we believe we have achieved some success.

A major advancement has been the addition of music extracts from our range of recorded albums over the past 33 years.  This involved serious, lengthy site programming and conversion and editing of the albums to digital form from vinyl and tape.  Many thanks to John Nicholson, Leon Jones and others for providing much of the material.  A natural progression is to share our music and performances through media such as Youtube and Facebook and we look forward to meeting this exciting challenge.  We believe this will open up our choir to a world wide audience.

We would however, like choristers to be a bit more pro-active in giving us feed back on the content and structure of  our site because it’s only by your involvement that we can continue to produce a site worthy of our choir.  It is YOUR web-site so please let us know what you would like to see and how it should be presented.  We would however, like to thank all members of the choir, the Committee and the Music Team for their support in enabling us to advance the web-site from its humble beginnings last April.

Once again, we wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and we look forward to singing with you again on January 5th.

Tony, Spike and Lyn

Santa’s Coming!

O.K. Lads! You can come in from the cold, now! Bring your new friend with you

We’ve only just got past Hallowe’en, Bonfire Night hasn’t arrived yet and Siân is already telling us to get ready for Christmas.  Can’t beat that for forward planning! “Bring your black Christmas folders to practice on Thursday” she warns with a smile.

Brilliant!  More enthusiastic renderings of Casatschok, smoothy Perry Como (remember him?) and Silver Bells, hearty God Rest You Merry Gentlemen bringing Joy to the World and vibrant Nowell for the Merrie Citie and many more.

Siân’s solo in O Holy Night is always worth waiting for.

This year’s Christmas Concert at the Choir Hall is with the children of Archbishop Rowan Williams Church in Wales Primary School, Portskewett on Thursday, December 8th.  Tickets are only available from the school.  This annual event to support the fundraising of local schools is always very popular so get your tickets early.

Don’t forget choristers, to get your Christmas hats sorted for this one, and please somebody, find one more original than Richie Llewelyn’s. More details to follow on this post soon.

Very popular events in the past, we will also be entertaining the crowds at the  The Old Barn Inn near Llanmartin on the 15th December and at the Haywain in Sandy Lane, Caldicot on the 19th December with our Christmas repertoire. Both venues have always given the Choir a very generous welcome in addition to their excellent gastronomic fayre in return for our harmonious vocal efforts, so please make every effort to sing with us.  These two venues have often resulted in new members joining the choir. Dates are also on the CONCERTS 2011 page.  More details to follow.
