St. Peter’s Church, Bromyard

St. Peter's Church, Bromyard

On Saturday, 30th July the choir performs it’s last concert of a busy mid-summer period in St. Peter’s church in Bromyard. The town of Bromyard is in the north-east of Herefordshire, equidistant between Hereford and Worcester, it is a small, medieval town with many historically interesting buildings, including a number of Tudor style, half-timbered pubs! The concert has been arranged to raise funds for the Bowls Club and the beautiful church. The church is fairly unusual in appearance in that it has a central tower, which dates back to the 12th century. The four supporting arches of the tower and the belfry are 14th century. As if to enhance the pervading feeling of antiquity in this ancient church, there is a remarkable amount of tomb recesses which may once have held coffins or effigies, so we could be singing to a spiritual and physical audience! The pulpit is 19th century and the altar table, with it’s carved legs , is said to have come from Hereford Cathedral, around 1805. There is, also, an effigy of St. Peter, with two keys guarding the main doorway. At the end of the concert the choir have been invited to Bromyard rugby football club.
