California Tour

During October 1991 the choir embarked on its tour of California and were proud to carry the banner of Caldicot Town in this sunny state.

It performed in some beautiful churches in the Los Angeles area, and enjoyed the visits to many interesting places, such as Disney Land. When visiting the Hollywood Bowl they gave an impromptu concert on this famous stage.

On then to Laguna Hills where they sang in the Leisure World auditorium, holding a thousand people, and the Concert was organised by Tom Dyson a native of Dowlais.

Moving north along the coast the next performance was in the Presbyterian Church at Santa Barbara, then on to San Luis Obispo where the choir sang in the auditorium at Cuesta College. It was here on Monday, 14th October that Siân our Musical Director gave her magnificent educational lecture on the “Music of Wales” backed by the choir. This was probably one of the highlights of the tour as it emphasised the versatility of the choir, and the quality of our Musical Director.

Next on to Carmel, Monterey where the choir entertained at the Old Spanish mission, a most wonderful experience enjoyed by all. Here again Siân showed her many talents when she accompanied our Soloist Iona Jones in singing the duet “Pie Jesu” from the Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Requiem”. A truly remarkable performance.

The choir moved on then to Los Gatos where they not only sang in Concert, but also sang for the senior citizens at two local venues, and in appreciation of their performance and friendliness the choir was presented with the key to the Town of Los Gatos.

On to San Francisco for our last performance at the University of California Theatre, and after enjoying the sights of this famous city, walking the “Streets of San Francisco” we returned home to Caldicot.
